The 21st Australian Combined Schools Music Festival brings together some of the finest young musicians from around the country to perform together under the guidance of outstanding conductors with national and international experience. The biennial festival is hosted by different Australian Schools; in 2019 it will be hosted by Sydney Grammar School.  The festival runs for 4 days; 26 – 29 June, concluding with the Festival Concert in the John Vallance Hall at Sydney Grammar School at 6.30pm on June 29.

The Festival musicians participate in one of three high standard ensembles with renowned conductors:

     Orchestra  – Daniel Carter (OS’07) 1812 Overture – Tchaikovsky

Water and Fire – Kats-Chernin

In Windsor Forest– Vaughan Williams (excerpts with Choir)

The Promise of Living from The Tender Land – Copland (excerpts with Choir)

     Concert Band – John Lynch Through the Looking Glass – Jess Turner

Ballad For Band – Morton Gould

A la Machaut – Andrew Boss

A Home Away From Home – Catherine Likhuta

Repertoire is not finalised and is subject to change.

Musicians who wish to participate in this exceptional musical experience are required to nominate and places are offered to the highest standard musicians according to the needs of the ensembles.  As a guide, minimum standards are approximately Grade 8 AMEB (or equivalent) for Strings and Grade 7 AMEB (or equivalent) for Woodwind and Brass. Choristers should be suitably experienced in high-standard choirs and proficient part-singers.


One talented student composer will have their original Fanfare performed as part of the Festival.

Entry is only open to registered festival participants, entries close April 3 2019. Further details will be available on the website.

Nomination forms for the Festival will be available from the Festival website www.acsmf.com and are due to your school Music Office no later than 12 November.

  • Places for the festival should be confirmed by December 2018.
  • Successful applicants will be asked to officially register online.
  • Music will be distributed in March 2019.
